Blue Arabesque
By Suzanne Fellows, lead artist. Created in collaboration with Wyomissing Area JSHS Public Art Workshop. 2020
Sponsored by Baldwin Brass, Wyomissing Area Education Foundation, Vicki Combs
Inspired by Islamic Geometry, Blue Arabesque is the the result of local artist Suzanne Fellows work in residence with the students of Wyomissing Area High School’s Public Art Workshop. The students learned both the historic and cultural backgrounds to these interlocking designs, as well as the geometry skills needed to create them. Each student created their own tessellating design which is featured inside the larger shapes of the mural. Can you find the design inspired by softball? How about the Class of 2020? The elegant shapes and metallic finish symbolically connect this artwork to the items found inside Baldwin Brass. Local artist Suzanne Fellows is in residence at GoggleWorks and also an art professor at Reading Area Community College.
This highly visible, colorful, cut-glass mosaic helps to humanize and invigorate the built environment. It uses unusual textures and materials to act as way-finding signage to point visitors in both directions of our outdoor art gallery. Adding beauty is one of our strategies to compete in the marketplace by making our community unique and distinctive. It demonstrates how public art adds vitality and liveliness to our community.
